Adding a Comfort Backstop
In order to "stabilize" the hooking mechanism (some patients are not comfortable with the hook not being absolutely rigid), a "Comfort Backstop" can be added using thermoplastic. The Comfort Backstop also provides a smooth surface for the patient's tongue to rest against.

Using a "flame brush" technique, create a sticky layer just under the hooking mechanism:
Add a "blob" of thermoplastic:
Insert and allow patient's tongue to mold for comfort, remove and allow to fully harden:
A "Comfort Backstop" will keep the hooking mechanism stable and provide a comfortable surface for the patient:
